It converts a run of trim and its height into square feet, then into the gallons or quarts to buy.

Trim is measured in linear feet, but paint is sold by area coverage. A trim paint calculator bridges the two: multiply the run of baseboard, casing, and doors by the trim height to get square feet, then apply coats, spread rate, and waste to reach a purchase quantity.

Because trim is narrow, the totals are small. A whole floor of baseboard can come in well under a gallon, which is why quarts often make more sense than gallons for trim. This calculator rounds the purchase up to the half gallon so you never run short mid-run, and it flags that a quart or two may be the smarter buy for small jobs.

The trim height is the average face height of what you are painting: about 6 inches for a common baseboard, more for tall base or wide casing. If you are painting several profiles, run the calculator once per profile or use a weighted average height, and add door and casing lengths into the linear feet.

How does this calculator size trim paint?

Linear feet times height gives area; coats, spread rate, and waste give gallons, rounded to the half gallon.

Trim area = linear feet x trim height. Raw gallons = (trim area x coats / spread rate) x (1 + waste / 100). Gallons to buy = ceil(raw x 2) / 2. For small jobs, a quart (0.25 gal) is often enough.

Trim area is the linear run times the trim height. Raw gallons multiply that area by the coat count, divide by the spread rate per gallon, and scale by the waste factor (1 + waste / 100). Gallons to buy round up to the half gallon with ceil(raw x 2) / 2. Should you buy quarts?

For trim, often yes. Trim runs are narrow, so the raw amount is frequently under a gallon. Two quarts is a half gallon, and a single quart is 0.25 gallon, so compare the rounded half-gallon figure against buying one or two quarts to cut cost and leftover. The calculator rounds up to the half gallon to keep a safety margin, but quarts are usually the practical purchase for small trim jobs.

Profiled trim and doors

A flat-area estimate slightly understates paneled doors and heavily profiled casing, where raised panels and edges add developed surface.
